LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles businessman who was stripped of his seat on the City Council last week by a recall vote by other council members is trying to sue the five other council members who removed him. Lee Adams, a retired Los Angeles police captain, has filed a lawsuit seeking damages of $1 million or more for "intentional infliction of emotional distress." In the suit filed Monday, Adams seeks to overturn the recall vote and force a new election. "These actions and statements were done in retaliation for the plaintiff's election opponent supporting the recall effort, and the plaintiff believes he was intimidated and harassed by the election sponsors," the lawsuit states. "The plaintiff contends the city defendants knew the actions they engaged in were illegal and unconstitutional." The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles by the Southern California law firm of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith. Adams was suspended from the council last month after making "unfortunate statements" about the mayor's race and the council's handling of the budget, Mayor Eric Garcetti's spokesman Alex Comisar said. Two recall signatures against Adams had been submitted with a deadline of Wednesday, but Comisar said the signatures were invalid and removed from the council's agenda by the mayor's office.
